Traditional Musical Instruments: Gamelan

Our beloved country Indonesia has many cultural treasures. One is the gamelan. Gamelan is a set of traditional musical instrument that evolved in several regions of the archipelago such as Java, Madura, Bali and Lombok. Shape and tone produced any different. Soft tones of Javanese gamelan, Balinese gamelan sounding stronger, more Sundanese gamelan lilting.

A set of gamelan consist of drums, fiddle, zither, xylophone, gongs, and bamboo flute.


It takes 3 or 4 drums in a gamelan. Shaped like a barrel, both sides of the drum is covered in leather goat or bull. The size of the two sides are not equal, the larger side to produce the tones lower. Name drums based on the size of large to small: gising drums, percussion puppet, ciblon drums, and drum ketipung. To ring it was hit with the palm of the hand.
 

Fiddle like a two-stringed violin. The main component of wood, strings are usually made of copper. During play, fiddle affixed to the neck and pointing upward.


Plop like a sitar, has 13 pairs of rope. Zither played with a nail, while the finger pressing the string to another.

There is a bar xylophone made of wood and some made of bronze. Each xylophone consisting of 19 or 20 bars. Bar length between 58 cm to 29 cm. To play it using 2 wooden bat length approximately 35 cm.


Dalam gamelan ada beberapa jenis alat musik seperti gong: gong ageng, kempul, kempyang, kenong, ketuk. Gong ageng adalah gong yang digantung dan ukurannya yang paling besar. Permukaannya datar, di tengahnya ada tonjolan. Ukurannya beragam, biasanya berdiameter 85 cm. Membunyikannya dengan menggunakan pemukul kayu yang kepalanya yang ditutupi lapisan pemberat.
